According to data from the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD), Turkey's steel exports reached 1.3 million tonnes in April 2026, up 11.3% year-on-year, with an export value of $885.5 million, an increase of 9.3%.
However, looking at the overall performance for the first four months of the year, Turkish steel exports remained slightly below the levels seen during the same period last year. By product category, exports during the January–April period were as follows: flat products totaled 1.94 million tonnes (down 8.0%); long products totaled 2.57 million tonnes (down 2.1%); and semi-finished products totaled 273,700 tonnes (up 28.5%).
Meanwhile, Turkey's steel imports saw significant growth. In April, the volume of steel imports reached 1.58 million tonnes, up 17.7% year-on-year, while the import value stood at $1.08 billion, an increase of 7.8%.
For the January–April period, total steel imports amounted to 5.93 million tonnes (up 6.3% year-on-year) with a total value of $4.05 billion (up 0.9%). As the growth of imports outpaced that of exports, Turkey's steel trade coverage ratio (the ratio of export value or volume to import value or volume) fell from 83.44% in the same period last year to 78.16%, indicating a deterioration in the trade balance.
Data shows that imported steel accounted for 43.7% of Turkey's domestic steel consumption in the first four months of this year. Notably, approximately 60% of these imports entered the market under the "bonded processing regime," intended for processing and subsequent re-export.
Regarding production, Turkey's crude steel output in April stood at 3.29 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 9.4%; the cumulative output for the January–April period reached 13 million tonnes, up 6.3% year-on-year.
Billet production in April was 1.94 million tonnes (up 3.5% year-on-year), with a cumulative total of 7.70 million tonnes for January–April (down 0.4% year-on-year); slab production in April was 1.34 million tonnes (up 19.2% year-on-year), with a cumulative total of 5.34 million tonnes for January–April (up 17.6% year-on-year).
In terms of demand, Turkey's consumption of rolled steel products reached 3.34 million tonnes in April, a year-on-year increase of 12.0%. Notably, Turkey's crude steel production rose by 3.3% year-on-year to 38.12 million tonnes, whereas pig iron production fell by 4.6% to 9.71 million tonnes—a trend reflecting the country's steelmaking structure, which is heavily reliant on electric arc furnaces.
