The United States once again delays imposing tariffs on Chinese imports

Share:

The United States has once again postponed announcing tariffs on products imported from China, including electric vehicles and key minerals.

The United States first announced the imposition of tariffs in May and is expected to take effect on August 1st, but the Office of the United States S275JR steel Trade Representative (USTR) stated in July that a final ruling will be issued later in August. However, according to the announcement on August 31st local time, the imposition of tariffs has been further postponed until September.

The new tariff increase plan includes raising the tax rate on lithium-ion batteries and battery components for S275JR steel electric vehicles from 7.5% to 25% starting from 2024. This also includes imposing a 100% import tariff on pure electric vehicles made in China, and Canada has followed suit with this tariff measure.

Other imported S275JR steel products subject to higher tariffs include lithium-ion non electric vehicle batteries, natural graphite, and permanent magnets, whose tax rates will increase in 2026.
