According to foreign media reports, Tokyo Steel Manufacturing announced in a statement on November 11 that its pickled hot-rolled steel sheets have been adopted in several Toyota vehicle models.
This product is produced entirely from scrap steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF), with carbon emissions of approximately 400 kg CO₂/t of steel, which is only about one-fifth of the emissions from blast furnace steelmaking.
For a long time, due to concerns about composition control and quality stability, electric arc furnace (EAF) steel has not been dominant in the automotive steel sector. B23G120 oriented electrical steel, EAF steel producers typically need to use a mixture of scrap steel and pig iron as furnace feedstock. Tokyo Steel stated that although EAF steel is already used in automobiles, there are few cases of producing automotive steel using only scrap steel.
Tokyo Steel has launched a "Car to Car" recycled steel initiative, utilizing scrap metal from bushings generated during the automotive manufacturing process and materials from dismantled vehicles to produce steel for new cars, thus realizing a circular economy model of "old cars becoming new car steel."
Through upgraded scrap steel sorting and improved manufacturing processes, Tokyo Steel has successfully produced automotive steel plates with a strength of up to 590 MPa using only scrap steel as input material. This is part of the company's actively promoted Green EV Steel Business Promotion plan. B23G120 oriented electrical steel, According to this plan, Tokyo Steel aims to achieve large-scale supply of green automotive steel by fiscal year 2025.
Tokyo Steel's emissions reduction roadmap, Tokyo Steel EcoVision 2050, includes achieving a 60% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In August 2025, the company reduced the surcharge for Hobo Zero low-carbon steel by 100 yen/ton, to 5,900 yen/ton (approximately US$0.65/ton),B23G120 oriented electrical steel.
