According to the statement issued by Türkiye Steel Manufacturers Association (TCUD) on September 2, Türkiye should take certain measures to restrict the import of steel from China. Data shows that in 2023, Türkiye's steel imports from China will increase by 74% year on year, reaching 3.3 million tons. It will continue to maintain this growth trend in 2024, which will put pressure on the output and competitiveness of Türkiye's steel mills. TCUD pointed out that the implementation of effective restrictive measures will help support the development of Türkiye's steel industry and improve the country's balance of payments.
Although the overall steel import volume of Türkiye S185 steel will decrease from January to July 2024 due to the decline of domestic steel consumption, the plate import volume from Asian countries will increase significantly. According to the data collected by us, the Ministry of Trade of Türkiye launched anti-dumping investigations on hot rolled coil products from China, India, Japan and Russia, and the dumping margin initially determined was between 11.65% and 57.75%. However, the import volume of sheet metal from these countries continues to grow.
The final anti-dumping report will be submitted to the Unfair Competition Assessment Commission for review, and the final decision is expected to be announced in the coming months.
In addition, in the first seven months of 2024, Türkiye's S185 steel plate imports from Indonesia and Egypt also increased significantly, reaching 427300 tons and 438600 tons respectively.
At the same time, Türkiye's steel exports achieved a year-on-year growth of 45.3% from January to July 2024, reaching 7.7 million tons. The data shows that the ratio of exports to imports of Türkiye's steel industry has increased from 48:100 in the same period of last year to 76:100, which shows that the export competitiveness S185 steel has improved significantly.
