U.S. steel imports fell 7% year-on-year in August

From January to August 2025, the United States imported a total of 18.729 million tons of steel, a 7% decrease year-on-year. Of this, 13.897 million tons were rolled products, a 10.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. Canada, Brazil, and Mexico are the top three sources of steel imports to the United States. This period saw imports of 3.41 million tons from Canada (a 24.5% year-on-year decrease), X42Q steel, 3.15 million tons from Brazil (a 6.9% year-on-year decrease), and 2.22 million tons from Mexico (a 2.7% year-on-year decrease).

In 2024, the United States imported 22.5 million tons of rolled steel, a 3.7% increase from 2023; total steel imports (including rolled products and semi-finished products) reached 28.86 million tons, a 2.5% increase year-on-year. The main sources of imports that year were Canada (6.56 million tons), Brazil (4.49 million tons) and Mexico (3.52 million tons).

In 2024, U.S. steel production reached 79.5 million tons, a 2.4% decrease year-on-year. Global steel production during the same period was 1.84 billion tons, a 0.9% decrease year-on-year.
