Since March, due to the Russo Ukrainian conflict, maritime transportation in Ukrainian seaports has been temporarily interrupted between February 2022 and August 2023. Ukraine's fossil fuel and hydroelectric power plants have suffered severe damage, resulting in Ukraine losing 9 gigawatts of power generation capacity, which is over 40% of Ukraine's total power generation capacity. This has led to a significant decline in overall steel production in Ukraine A1008 Grade 40(275) steel. The operations of many steel companies have also been severely affected by power shortages.
Metinvest also stated that its two major steel mills, Azovstal and Illich Steel, have been destroyed. As about 16% of its employees have been mobilized to the front line, the company is facing a shortage of labor.
