Brazil’s steel plate exports dropped sharply in March, with sales to the U.S. declining

According to data released today by Brazil's Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade and the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), Brazil's steel billet exports in March plummeted 63% from the 749,200 tonnes reported the previous month, falling to 297,600 tonnes. JIS G 3313 SEFH540 steel strip, Secex data shows that exports to the United States dropped from 536,900 tonnes in February to 238,800 tonnes in March, noting that ArcelorMittal made no exports to the U.S. in March, whereas its total exports to the country in February had amounted to 249,100 tonnes.

Mysteel understands that local slab production was diverted to the domestic market, primarily to meet the rising rolling requirements of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) and Usiminas. Some export volumes have been postponed to April, so total exports for that month are expected to exceed those of March. JIS G 3313 SEFH540 steel strip, In March, Ternium exported 238,800 tonnes of billets to the U.S. at an FOB price of $594/tonne, while ArcelorMittal Tubarão exported 31,700 tonnes to France and 27,100 tonnes to Germany at FOB prices of $473/tonne and $477/tonne, respectively.

Secex reported that Usiminas imported 19,800 tonnes of steel billets from Vietnam at a price of $468 per tonne, also on an FOB basis.
