On June 17, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) announced the launch of Zagnelis Protect, a high-performance coated steel product designed specifically for automotive applications. JAC440P Hot dip galvanized steel strip,Featuring a zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating and superior corrosion resistance, this product aims to drive the localization of high-end steel products that have long relied on imports.
Zagnelis Protect utilizes ArcelorMittal’s proprietary technology—already proven in the European market—and is now being manufactured in India for the first time. JAC440P Hot dip galvanized steel strip,AM/NS India will supply this product to automakers, helping to shorten lead times, enhance supply reliability, and ensure consistent quality. Initially, the product will be used for motor housings in DC motors found in components such as power windows, rearview mirrors, windshield wipers, and seats; as a typical vehicle contains 20 to 30 such components, the improved corrosion resistance will help optimize overall vehicle performance.
According to the company, approximately 8% to 10% of the key steel grades used in the Indian automotive sector currently rely on imports due to the advanced coating and metallurgical processes required for their production. With India’s annual vehicle production exceeding 30 million units, the demand for corrosion-resistant and lightweight materials is projected to rise steadily, creating an increasingly urgent need for the local sourcing of high-end steel sheets.

Leveraging the cutting-edge technology and expertise of its parent companies—ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel—AM/NS India is localizing the supply of this world-class import-substitute product. This initiative will assist automotive companies in meeting global standards and contribute to India’s vision of a self-reliant nation (Aatmanirbhar Bharat).
In addition to motor housings, the company expects product applications to expand into areas such as chassis components, inner door panels, inner hood panels, and inner tailgate panels.
