In May, the Dung Quat Steel Complex—a subsidiary of Vietnam’s Hoa Phat Group—successfully developed and produced S700MC, a high-strength structural steel meeting the European standard BS EN10149; this marks the first time this grade of steel has been manufactured domestically in Vietnam. S700MC is a low-alloy, hot-rolled steel sheet characterized by high strength, excellent cold-formability, and superior weldability. With a yield strength exceeding 700 MPa, it offers superior load-bearing capacity and resistance to deformation compared to conventional steels. This steel grade is a high-performance material requiring rigorous quality control throughout the entire production process—spanning steelmaking, refining, continuous casting, and rolling. Hoa Phat has stated that it has mastered a suite of core technologies, including optimized chemical composition design, micro-alloying techniques, precipitation control, and thermo-mechanical control processes. The company notes that mass production of this product will help increase the localization rate of raw materials for the domestic machinery industry and reduce reliance on imports, while also enabling Vietnamese enterprises to participate more deeply in the global industrial materials supply chain.
Previously, Hoa Phat developed high-grade products such as PC steel, as well as steel for elevator and crane wire ropes. In the automotive sector, the company supplies wire rods for tire bead wire (e.g., SWRH82A and SWRH72A) and chassis steels (e.g., S315MC–S650MC and SAPH440).
