China files complaint with WTO over Canada’s steel and aluminum tariffs

The World Trade Organization (WTO) said on Wednesday that China has filed a dispute consultation with the WTO regarding Canada's additional tariffs and quotas on steel and aluminum products RAIN RI/E550 steel.

The measures at issue include Canada's tariff-rate quotas on steel imports from non-free trade partners, RAIN RI/E550 steel such as China, and additional taxes on manufactured goods containing Chinese steel or aluminum.

Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would impose a 25% tariff on steel imports from China by the end of July to protect its steel industry.

Huzaif Qaisar, a spokesman for the Canadian Trade Department, defended the move, saying, "We will not hesitate to take action when our industry is threatened by unfair practices. RAIN RI/E550 steel " He added, "These measures target China's overcapacity and non-market practices, which are weakening Canada's steel industry and threatening Canadian jobs."
