According to media reports citing preliminary data from the Indian government, HX160YD+ZM steel strip ,China’s exports of finished steel to India in April 2026 totaled approximately 232,000 tonnes—more than double the figure from the same period the previous year and a high not seen in at least two years—making China India’s largest supplier of finished steel for the month.
As the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel, India had previously implemented three-year import tariffs on certain steel products in December 2025 to balance market supply and demand and support the growth of its domestic steel industry.
Data indicates that the finished steel exported from China to India in April consisted primarily of hot-rolled coils (HRC) and stainless steel products. HX160YD+ZM steel strip ,While hot-rolled coils fall under India's current tariff measures, stainless steel products are not included in the scope of these levies.
Data shows that Vietnam exported 59,000 tonnes of finished steel to India in April—a more than fourfold increase year-on-year—establishing itself as a major source of steel imports for India.
An executive from another major steel company noted that, due to the situation in the Middle East, some hot-rolled coil supplies originally intended for that region were diverted to the Indian market, driving the recent rise in import volumes.
Industry analysts project that Chinese steel exports to India are likely to maintain their growth momentum in May.
Driven by an increase in imported supplies, India reverted to being a net steel importer in April, reversing a trend of slowing imports seen in the preceding months following the implementation of trade measures.
However, looking at the 2025/26 fiscal year as a whole, China's total steel exports to India fell by 39.4% year-on-year to 1.5 million tonnes, and India maintained its overall status as a net steel exporter.
Meanwhile, steel demand continues to rise alongside the ongoing expansion of India's infrastructure and automotive manufacturing sectors. Data shows that India's consumption of finished steel reached 13 million tonnes in April 2026, an increase of 8.2% year-on-year.
