According to media reports, Mexican steel producer TYASA has officially launched production for the first phase of its Special Bar Quality (SBQ) steel project at its industrial complex in Ixtaczoquitlán, Veracruz. With a total investment of approximately $250 million and a designed annual capacity of 400,000 tons, the project primarily supplies high-end steel products to industries such as automotive manufacturing, metalworking, oil and gas, energy equipment, and tool manufacturing.
The first phase of the project focuses on producing round bars with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 4 inches, as well as hot-rolled flat bars with widths of 2 to 4 inches and thicknesses ranging from 5/16 to 1 inch.
TYASA stated that this project is part of the company's overall development plan for special steels. HX180YD+ZM steel strip ,According to the plan, subsequent phases will involve the construction of inspection and surface treatment lines, cold processing lines, and heat treatment lines, all expected to come online progressively starting in the third quarter of 2026.
The company noted that the new project would help strengthen Mexico's domestic supply capacity for special steels. Mexico's high-end special steel market has long relied heavily on imports; the commissioning of this project is expected to boost local supply levels and enhance the competitiveness of the manufacturing supply chain.
TYASA stated: "With the commissioning of this new capacity, the company will further enhance its special steel supply capabilities in Mexico and help the local manufacturing sector establish a more stable and competitive supply chain system."
The project created approximately 250 direct jobs and over 3,000 indirect jobs during its construction phase.
With the commissioning of the project's first phase, TYASA’s total steel production capacity has risen to 1.6 million tonnes per year.
