EMSTEEL, the UAE-based integrated steel and cement company encompassing Emirates Steel and Emirates Cement, has taken another significant step forward in its sustainability journey, becoming the first company in the Middle East and North Africa to receive ResponsibleSteel Core Site Certification. RAIN RI/A690 steel This achievement not only brings international recognition to the company, but also sets a new benchmark for low-carbon, transparent, and sustainable production within the regional steel industry.
The certification was awarded by the UK-based CARES (Rebar Certification Service) after a rigorous audit covering over 300 ESG requirements under the ResponsibleSteel international production standard. RAIN RI/A690 steel ResponsibleSteel CEO Annie Heaton stated that EMSTEEL's certification marks ResponsibleSteel's official entry into the Middle East and North Africa region, setting an important benchmark for the regional steel industry.
Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, emphasized that the company will continue to lead the development of advanced manufacturing in the UAE while driving the decarbonization of the steel value chain. Its carbon reduction roadmap aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline – more than double the UAE's national emission reduction target – and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Notably, in 2023, EMSTEEL partnered with Masdar to launch the region's first hydrogen-based steelmaking pilot project. Currently, RAIN RI/A690 steel EMSTEEL operates three direct reduced iron (DRI) units and three electric arc furnaces (EAFs), with annual production capacities of 4.2 million tons and 3.6 million tons, respectively. Its rolling mill comprises three rebar production lines (with an annual output of 2 million tons), one heavy section mill (with an annual output of 1 million tons), and one wire rod production line (with an annual output of 500,000 tons).
