In 2023, the export volume of Russian billets decreased by 12%

Share:

In 2023, mainly affected by the increase in transportation costs to Asia and the slowdown in demand for steel billets in China, the export volume of Russian billets decreased by 12% to 5 million tons.

Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa remain the main export destinations for Russian billets. Since the beginning of 2024, the price fluctuations of square billets have shown regional differences, with Black Sea FOB SAPH440 steel prices dropping by 8% to $520 per ton. The FOB price in the Far East has increased by 2% to $510 SAPH440 steel per ton. Overall, the average price of Russian billets in 2023 is $513 per ton.

In the domestic market of Russia, the production of rebar takes priority over the production of billets. The main participants in the market include companies such as Mechel, Severstal, Evraz, NLMK, and MMK. The domestic price of rebar is showing an increasing trend. By the end of February 2024, the price of rebar reached 65000 rubles/ton, an increase of about 8% compared to the average price of 55000-60000 rubles/ton in 2023.

Overall, the export profit of Russian billets is lower than that of domestic rebar, and steel companies are more inclined to sell rebar in the domestic market, with insufficient willingness to export semi-finished SAPH440 steel products.
