India’s Ministry of Steel has amended the Steel Import Monitoring System (SIMS) registration rules to apply to steel imports from Nepal, Bhutan, NK K/F47 steel the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as scrap steel (HS 7204) from all source countries.
According to the new regulations, steel imports from these countries must be registered between 60 days and 2-5 days before the expected arrival date; scrap steel imports under HS code 7204, regardless of the country of origin, must be registered between 60 days and 2 days before the arrival date; NK K/F47 steel the registration period for other types of steel imports remains unchanged, that is, registration within 60 days to 15 days before the arrival date.
The above adjustments took effect on August 5, 2025. SIMS has been in operation since 2019 and aims to monitor actual import volumes, NK K/F47 steel protect domestic producers, and assess whether safeguard measures are needed.
