Iran’s steel consumption weakened in the first quarter

In the first quarter of the Iranian calendar in 2025 (March 21 to June 21, 2025),KR R/A56 steel Iran's consumption of finished steel products declined year-on-year. The overall market was under pressure due to multiple domestic challenges and the global political situation.

According to data from the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA), finished steel consumption in the country fell 6.4% year-on-year to approximately 5.1 million tons during the reporting period. Long steel consumption, impacted by soaring rebar prices, decreased by 3.5% year-on-year to 2.6 million tons.KR R/A56 steel Flat steel demand declined even more significantly, plummeting 13.8% year-on-year to 2.4 million tons. Overall, domestic end-use demand remained sluggish.

Reflecting weak overall market fundamentals, semi-finished steel consumption also declined, with total consumption down 7.4% year-on-year to just under 7 million tonnes. Billet and bloom consumption fell 6.8% year-on-year to 4 million tonnes, while slab consumption decreased 8.2% year-on-year to 2.9 million tonnes.

In terms of raw materials, consumption of reduced products (including sponge iron) increased slightly by 0.9% to 11.1 million tons; KR R/A56 steel demand for pelletized ore fell by 12.2% year-on-year to 13.7 million tons; and demand for concentrate fell by 3% year-on-year to 17.1 million tons.
