In the first eight 15NiMn6 steel months of the current Persian calendar year (March 21 to November 21, 2024), Iran's exports of semi-finished steel products have shown a significant downward trend, further exacerbated by power shortages and restrictions on foreign exchange return policies. Unlike the sluggish performance of finished steel products, the raw materials sector has maintained strong growth, forming a sharp contrast.
According to the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA), Iran's semi-finished steel exports decreased by 22% year-on-year to 3.84 million tons. Among them, the export of billets and slabs decreased by 12%, about 3.02 million tons; The decrease in slab production is particularly significant, with a sharp drop of 45% to 824000 tons. In contrast, the strong performance of raw material exports has become a key support for the steel industry. According to statistics, the export volume of pellet ore reached 6.89 million 15NiMn6 steel tons, a year-on-year increase of 9%; The export volume of DRI and hot pressed iron blocks (HBI) increased by 13%, reaching 1.24 million tons; The export of iron ore concentrate remained stable at 4.45 million tons.
In the field of finished steel products, the performance is somewhat complex. The total export volume of finished steel products increased by 17% year-on-year, reaching 2.52 million tons, with long steel exports being the main driving force, increasing by 22% year-on-year to 2.26 million tons; In contrast, exports of flat materials decreased by 12% to only 260000 tons. It is reported that the growth of long timber exports is mainly due to the active activities of trading companies, while steel mills are subject to significant restrictions on exports due to domestic 15NiMn6 steel regulatory pressure.
Overall, Iran's steel export structure is clearly differentiated, with strong performance in the upstream raw material sector, while downstream semi-finished and finished steel products continue to be under pressure due to internal and external pressures.
