Strike Continues, Finnish Steel Mill Profits Are Severely Damaged

Share:

At present, worker strikes in Finland are still ongoing, and Finnish steel mills are trying to minimize the impact of strikes on steel plant operations and cargo transportation.

On March 28, 2024, Finland's largest steel SPHC steel manufacturer, Outokumpu, stated that a one week extension of the strike had caused a loss of nearly 80 million euros in the company's pre tax and interest (EBITDA) profit. The political strike in Finland SPHC steel began on March 11, 2024, and the resulting losses were twice as assessed in early March 2024. Outokumpu stated that strikes have brought many uncertain factors to business operations, as well as negative impacts on employees and customers. Additionally, the inability to protect and repair equipment during strikes has increased the risk of equipment damage and malfunction.

Since the strike, most of the stainless steel and alloy production in Outokumpu has come to a standstill, and the Tornio port in Finland has also been shut down. Finnish steel producer SSAB also revised its performance forecast for the strike on March 28, 2024, raising the estimated impact from 30 billion kroner in early March 2024 to 35 billion kroner. If the strike continues into the second quarter, it is expected that the weekly operating performance will suffer a loss of approximately 125 million Swedish kroner SPHC steel.
