Tata Steel to Introduce EASyMelt Technology; Blast Furnace Retrofit Could Halve Carbon Emissions

India's Tata Steel announced on April 21 that it has signed a definitive agreement with Paul Wurth—a subsidiary of the SMS Group—to implement Electrically Assisted Syngas Smelter (EASyMelt) technology. DX51D+ZF Hot dip Zinc-Iron alloy coating (ZF) steel ,Tata Steel will carry out the world's first industrial-scale demonstration of this technology in phases at the "E" Blast Furnace of its Jamshedpur plant.

EASyMelt is an electrified direct reduction and melting process that combines electricity with syngas; it requires only minimal coke and completely replaces traditional hot blast stoves with gases such as coke oven gas, natural gas, hydrogen, and ammonia. DX51D+ZF Hot dip Zinc-Iron alloy coating (ZF) steel ,This flexibility in fuel input allows steel plants to adapt to local resource availability. As many markets face challenges regarding scrap supply, iron ore quality, and access to green energy, EASyMelt offers an alternative to the direct reduction route, helping to bridge the gap between iron ore supply and the demand for green steel. Compared to traditional blast furnace steelmaking, this process eliminates the need for costly plant-wide replacements and does not rely on the high-grade iron ore required by direct reduction facilities; this reduces both capital and operating costs while cutting CO2 emissions by more than 50%.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding in June 2023 to collaborate on decarbonizing steel production processes, and this final agreement marks the formal implementation of that partnership. Following the completion of a Front-End Loading Study, the parties will proceed to the phased demonstration and implementation stage.

Tata Steel has set a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, and the decarbonization retrofit of its existing blast furnaces is a key initiative in this effort.
