China’s finished steel exports maintain high levels, hot coil exports face challenges

According to data released by China GL A420 steel Customs on June 9th, the export volume of finished steel products in May 2025 was 10.578 million tons, an increase of 9.8% year-on-year, ranking fifth in history. This indicates that steel exports remain strong against the backdrop of sustained weak domestic demand. On a daily basis, the average export volume in May was 341200 tons, a decrease of 2.2% compared to April. The cumulative export volume from January to May was 48.469 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.9%; The import volume during the same period was 2.553 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 16.1%, while the net export increased by 10.7% year-on-year to 45.916 million tons.

According to GL A420 steel market feedback, the high export volume in May was mainly due to some exporters shipping ahead of schedule to avoid uncertainty caused by domestic policy changes starting from July. According to market news, relevant departments will strengthen supervision on false value-added tax operations in the export process from July 1st. Some traders have significantly tightened their operational pace, and it is expected that export volume will gradually decline from June onwards.

In terms of hot coil exports, the Vietnamese GL A420 steel market has recently shown weak performance. local Vietnamese manufacturers have communicated with the government regarding anti-dumping policies, and the final ruling result is expected to be announced soon. Previously, Vietnam imposed temporary anti-dumping duties ranging from 19.38% to 27.83% on Chinese hot coils with a width less than 1880mm in February, and the impact has gradually become apparent. Data shows that from January to April, China's export volume of hot coils to Vietnam was 1.757 million tons, a significant decrease of 45.9% year-on-year. The market expects that if the final ruling scope is expanded to 1880-2000mm width products, it will further compress the export space of Chinese hot coils to Vietnam.

Despite the pressure on hot coil exports, exports of long and steel billets still show bright spots. The export of Chinese billets (specification 3SP 150mm) has not been restricted by overseas trade investigations. The cumulative export volume from January to April reached 3.045 million tons, a significant increase of 557% year-on-year, with an increase of 2.581 million tons, becoming a key growth point in the export structure.

Although the export volume of some varieties may fluctuate in the short term due to policies and trade barriers, benefiting from the sluggish domestic demand and the relative advantage of Chinese steel prices in the global market, the overall export of Chinese finished steel products is expected to remain relatively high in the second half of the year.
