Indian car manufacturer calls on government not to restrict steel imports to avoid production disruptions

Recently, the Association of Indian Automobile X9CrMoVNb9-1 steel Manufacturers (ACMA) and the Association of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) made a request to the government at an event held in early December to relax restrictions on steel imports, especially the issuance of "No Objection Certificates" (NOCs), in order to avoid potential disruptions to Indian automobile production caused by steel supply.

ACMA and SIAM believe that although promoting localized production is a long-term development direction, importing steel is inevitable in certain special circumstances. For certain steel products, their technical requirements are very professional and the demand is low, so localized production is not economically X9CrMoVNb9-1 steel reasonable.

Since October, the market has begun to disclose issues regarding the issuance of no objection certificates. According to the regulations of the Indian government, for certain steel products whose specifications are not on the BIS quality certification list, they need to obtain a no objection certificate issued by the Indian Ministry of Steel before they can be imported. In a statement released on November 27th, the Indian Ministry of Steel stated that some importers in the market have avoided BIS standards by changing the names of steel grades and other means, in order to import low-priced steel. Therefore, the Ministry of Steel has suspended the issuance of no objection certificates.

The issue of no objection certificates not only affects India's steel imports, but also puts some pressure on the production of the automotive manufacturing industry. The import restrictions on steel may lead to instability in the raw material supply chain, thereby affecting the smooth progress of automobile production.

While promoting localized production in the steel industry, the Indian government should also take into account the actual needs of industries such as automobile manufacturing. In the situation where steel production has not fully met the domestic market demand, appropriate import of steel is still of great significance for ensuring the health and sustainable development of the domestic industrial X9CrMoVNb9-1 steel chain
