Tata Steel completes second phase expansion of Kalinganagar steel plant in Odisha

On May 22nd, Tata Steel AB/EQ51 steel announced that its second phase expansion project at the Kalinganagar steel plant in Odisha, India, has been successfully completed. The plant's annual production capacity has increased from 3 million tons to 8 million tons, and Tata Steel's total production capacity in India has also increased to 26.1 million tons.

The total investment of this project is 270 billion rupees, which started in November 2018 and lasted for nearly six years. The expansion covers raw material processing, upgrading upstream and midstream facilities, as well as downstream supporting capacity construction including cold rolling plants. The newly put into operation blast furnace has a lining capacity of 5870 cubic meters, making it currently the largest blast furnace in India AB/EQ51 steel.

Tata Steel plans to expand its production base in Kalinganagar, focusing on supplying high-strength advanced steel grades to serve key industries such as automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defense.

It is understood that Odisha has become Tata Steel's AB/EQ51 steel largest investment destination. In the past decade, the company has invested over 1 trillion rupees in the state. Apart from Kalinganagar, Tata Steel's Meramandali steel plant (formerly known as Bushang Steel) has a production capacity of 5.6 million tons, Jamshedpur steel plant has a production capacity of 11 million tons, and Gamharia and NINL steel plants each have a production capacity of 1 million tons.
