At the beginning of 2025, the demand A517 Grade S steel for ordinary steel in Japan will continue to decline, mainly due to the weak fundamentals of the construction and automotive industries.
According to the latest data from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF), domestic carbon steel consumption in Japan decreased by 3.2% year-on-year to 2.77 million tons in January 2025, after a 6% decline in December 2024. Affected by high raw material prices and labor shortages, steel consumption in the construction industry decreased by 4.9% year-on-year. The demand in the automotive industry decreased by 2% year-on-year, but driven by strong domestic sales and the alleviation of certification issues, Toyota's A517 Grade S steel production in January increased by 22.3% year-on-year, reaching 266000 vehicles.
The shipbuilding industry is showing a positive trend. Mysteel learned that the steel demand in the industry increased by 12.3% year-on-year during the same period.
From April 2024 to January 2025 (the first ten months of this fiscal year), the total consumption of ordinary steel in Japan was 27.6 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.6%. Among them, the steel consumption in the shipbuilding industry increased slightly by 1% year-on-year to 2.4 million tons, while the demand in the construction and automotive industries decreased by 6.5% and 7.9% year-on-year, respectively, to 6.8 million tons A517 Grade S steel and 5.7 million tons.
