Tibnor, a subsidiary of the Swedish steelmaker SSAB, has reportedly received regulatory approval to acquire Ovako Metals Oy Ab—the Finnish distribution arm of European steelmaker Ovako—for €40 million, a move that will strengthen Tibnor's position in the Finnish engineering steel market.

SSAB announced on April 17 that the deal, originally unveiled in December 2025, is expected to close in the coming weeks. ASTM A463 Extra Deep drawing steel strip ,The acquisition will expand Tibnor’s footprint in the engineering steel market, which primarily serves the manufacturing, processing, and construction sectors. This transaction reflects the ongoing consolidation among Nordic steel distributors as companies seek economies of scale amidst a regional shift in steel consumption patterns toward high-value-added specialty products. Tibnor will take over Ovako Metals' product portfolio, logistics and warehousing operations, processing services, and local sales organization in Finland.

Ovako Metals Oy Ab stated that the divestment aligns with Ovako’s strategy of focusing on its core business as a leading producer of engineering steel, while ensuring the continued development of the Finnish distribution operations under an owner with distribution as a core competency. ASTM A463 Extra Deep drawing steel strip ,The acquisition enables Tibnor to take over Ovako Metals’ established customer relationships within the Finnish engineering sector. Despite broader economic headwinds facing the European steel market, demand in this sector for specialized steel grades used in machinery, equipment manufacturing, and industrial applications has remained relatively stable. Compared to commodity-grade products, engineering steel typically commands a higher premium, offering distributors greater profit potential through value-added processing and technical services.

Tibnor is understood to be a subsidiary of the Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB; SSAB operates steel mills in Sweden, Finland, and the United States, ASTM A463 Extra Deep drawing steel strip ,and engages in the distribution of steel and metals across the Nordic and Baltic regions.
