Germany-based ThyssenKrupp announced on April 14 that it has joined the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance (ERA). Launched under the leadership of the European Commission, this new framework brings together companies from across the entire hydrogen value chain—spanning production, transport, and end-use—with the aim of accelerating the deployment of clean hydrogen while balancing decarbonization and energy security. Energy companies, infrastructure operators, and steel manufacturers are collaborating to tackle the regulatory, cost, and infrastructure challenges hindering hydrogen commercialization, with the ultimate goal of establishing a commercially viable market.
The alliance will focus its efforts on two core pillars: improving the investment climate through unified policy advocacy and addressing bottlenecks by coordinating activities across production, transport, and demand. Its goal is to establish a self-sufficient system for low-carbon fuels and raw materials within the region, thereby reducing reliance on imported energy. A white paper released alongside the alliance's launch notes that fewer than 7% of hydrogen-related projects have reached a Final Investment Decision (FID); it identifies high electricity costs, demand uncertainty, and delays in infrastructure development as the primary obstacles to hydrogen deployment.
