On July 7, 2025, according to Russian media reports, Russian BV/AH40 steel giant Severstal is advancing its long-standing wire production capacity expansion project at its CherMK metallurgical plant. The newly built No. 170 rolling mill has officially entered the cold trial stage, marking a critical period of progress for the project.
The designed annual production capacity of the 170 wire rod rolling mill is 900000 tons, and it will replace the existing production line after completion. The project was originally scheduled to start production in 2023, but was postponed due to international sanctions and equipment supplier adjustments. At present, cold commissioning has been initiated, and it is expected that the first production line will undergo hot commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Severstal stated that after the 170 BV/AH40 steel rolling mill is fully put into operation, the company will optimize its product structure at CherMK, and some of the hot-rolled and tube products originally produced by the 250 production line will be transferred to the new rolling mill. At the same time, some of the production capacity of the new rolling mill will be used to supply its downstream subsidiary Severstal Metiz for metal products.
Market insiders say that this modernization upgrade plan has been in place for a long time, and the final effect may not fully manifest until 2026. In addition, Severstal stated that the output is mainly for personal use, but if market conditions are suitable, it is also possible to release a portion to the spot market.
In addition to the wire BV/AH40 steel production line, Severstal also launched the upgrade and renovation project of its flagship factory Cherepovets' No. 4 blast furnace in June this year, continuing to promote the modernization of core equipment.
