According to data released by Russian KR R/A32 steel Railways on its official Telegram channel on July 15th, the export volume of black metals transported by railway in Russia reached 12.3 million tons from January to June 2025, an increase of 13.3% compared to the same period last year.
Among them, over 60% of the export volume is sent to ports in southern and northwestern Russia, with 5.6 million tons and 2.1 million tons respectively. The railway shipping volume of Far Eastern ports is 1.1 million tons.
From a regional perspective, steel KR R/A32 steel mills located in Lipetsk Oblast and operated by NLMK (New Lipetsk Steel Plant) are the main source of exports, contributing 4.2 million tons of export volume. Chelyabinsk Oblast and Kemerovo Oblast contributed 1.7 million tons and 1.5 million tons respectively.
The Russian Steel Industry Association Russkaya Stal previously stated that it expects a partial recovery of 2.5% in Russian steel exports by 2025, but this growth is still insufficient to compensate for the overall impact of the decline in domestic steel sales. The association estimated that before the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russia's annual steel export volume remained between 31 million and 32 million tons, accounting for more than 45% of the total output, while in 2024, the KR R/A32 steel export volume had dropped significantly to 20 million tons.
