According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), U.S. imports of rolled steel totaled 1.25 million short tons in January 2026—a 7.7% increase month-on-month, but a substantial 45.9% decrease year-on-year,JFS A3021 JEH440W Automotive steel strip.
During the same period, total U.S. steel imports (including both rolled products and semi-finished goods) amounted to 1.65 million tons, representing a 4.6% increase month-on-month and a 46.3% decrease year-on-year.
In terms of product categories, the items accounting for the largest share of imports in January included: rebar at 112,420 tons (+76.3% M-o-M, -38.6% Y-o-Y); hot-dipped galvanized sheet at 107,980 tons (+5.4% M-o-M, -49% Y-o-Y); JFS A3021 JEH440W Automotive steel strip, large structural shapes at 105,770 tons (+16.8% M-o-M, -3.9% Y-o-Y); and oil country tubular goods (OCTG) at 104,790 tons (+24.6% M-o-M, -60.2% Y-o-Y).
In terms of origin, the primary sources of U.S. steel imports in January were: South Korea at 285,000 tons (down 31.2% month-on-month and 69.8% year-on-year); Mexico at 235,000 tons (up 72.1% month-on-month but down 50.2% year-on-year); Canada at 218,000 tons (down 6.6% month-on-month and 66.3% year-on-year); JFS A3021 JEH440W Automotive steel strip, Brazil at 177,000 tons (down 31.2% month-on-month and 66.3% year-on-year); and Taiwan, China, at 73,000 tons (up 87.3% month-on-month but down 14.7% year-on-year).
