Acquisition Hinders Upgrades, U.S. Steelworkers Union Appeals Against U.S. Steel

Share:

On January 12, 2024, the United Steelworkers of America (USW) filed a complaint against American Steel Company (USS) regarding Japan Steel's acquisition of American Steel Company.

According to a statement released by USW, USW believes that the agreement of American S420GD+ZA steel Company to acquire Nippon Steel violates multiple terms of the worker's labor contract. Criticized once again the greed of American steel companies and Japanese iron companies

USW stated that companies that want to acquire American steel companies should fulfill the terms of their employee contracts, such as pensions, dividends, retirement healthcare, etc. Therefore, the acquiring company needs to have the willingness to fulfill the terms and sufficient economic strength. The headquarters of American S420GD+ZA steel Company is located in Pittsburgh, but American Steel Company has decided to let Nippon Steel North America, located in Houston, fulfill the above contract terms. Currently, USW is unaware of the actual financial situation of the company, so there are concerns about employee protection in the future. On the second day after USW requested the CEO of American steel companies to come forward to resolve the dispute, USW filed an appeal and stated that it would persist until the end S420GD+ZA steel.
