The Canadian government requires that starting from November 5th this year, according to the Canadian Steel Import Monitoring Program, steel importers will need to report the "melting and pouring country" information of imported steel to the Canadian Border Service when filling out import declaration forms A792 Grade 40(275) steel.

Canadian Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, Wu Fengyi, made the above announcement on February 21 in Ottawa.

The Canadian government stated that this move aims to enhance the transparency of data collection and release related to steel imports. According to the phased implementation steps, steel importers can now choose to start reporting relevant information on the first production country of the original steel. This autumn will transition to mandatory reporting.

The Canadian Department of Global Affairs will analyze the relevant data and release a report on steel import trends.

The United States is currently the only country in the world that collects information on "melting and pouring countries" for imported steel A792 Grade 40(275) steel.

The Canadian government launched a public consultation in May 2022 to collect and publish information on the "melting and pouring countries" of imported steel, soliciting opinions and suggestions from steel producers, manufacturers and other related industry chains, as well as industry associations, unions, various types of enterprises, experts and scholars.

The official steel import monitoring program can collect and publish data on the type, quantity, origin, and value of steel imports. The plan has monitored over 373000 steel import transactions in 2023.

According to official Canadian data, in 2022, the Canadian steel industry employed nearly 23600 workers, contributing over CAD 4.5 billion to Canada's gross domestic product.

In 2021, the steel trade volume between Canada and the United States reached CAD 17.4 billion. Canada is the largest exporter of steel to the United States. In 2021, nearly 45% of US steel exports entered Canada A792 Grade 40(275) steel.
