The latest data from the Joint Factories Council (JPC) of India A203 Grade D steel shows that in January 2025, India's crude steel production reached 12.91 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.1%, mainly driven by the growth in demand for finished steel.
Specifically, India's A203 Grade D steel demand for finished steel reached 13.29 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%. In terms of imports and exports, the import volume of finished steel reached 868000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%; The export volume has significantly decreased, with a year-on-year decrease of 53.3% to 395000 tons. Against the backdrop of increasing demand, the certification of some overseas steel mills by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will expire in November 2024. According to Mysteel, Vietnam's Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Company updated its BIS certification in early February.
Accumulatively, India's crude steel production from April 2024 to January 2025 reached 124.92 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%; The total import volume of finished steel reached 8.29 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 20.3%; The total export volume during the same period was 3.99 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 28.9%.
Due to Tata Steel's planned routine maintenance of Kalinganagar and Jamshedpur factories from mid February to early March, it is expected that India's crude steel production will decrease year-on-year in February.
Overall, from April 2024 to January 2025, India A203 Grade D steel was a net importer of finished steel due to imports exceeding exports by approximately 4.3 million tons.
