After announcing the construction AB/F36 steel of the country's first tinplate production base in early 2025, Saudi Arabia recently signed a joint venture agreement with its Chinese partner, marking the substantive implementation stage of the project. This project has received strong support from the Saudi government, aiming to connect the entire industry chain of metal packaging materials, promote local manufacturing upgrading, and enhance export capabilities.
According to official information, Saudi Arabia's AB/F36 steel local industrial leader Al Watania for Industries (WFI) and China's Donghe Xin Group (DHX) have signed a joint venture agreement in the presence of the Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, planning to build a 400000 ton per year tinplate production facility in the Lasherr Industrial City. This agreement is a further deepening of the cooperation memorandum signed by both parties at the "Future Mineral Forum" in January 2025.
This project is the first tinplate manufacturing base in Saudi Arabia and even in the Middle East and North Africa region. It will adopt environmentally friendly production processes driven by natural gas, meet high energy efficiency and sustainable development standards, and is expected to achieve commercial production by mid-2027. The factory is designed with green and low-carbon as its core, and will have the ability to fully switch to renewable energy in the future, reflecting our shared commitment to sustainable development, "said Li Dong, Chairman of Donghe Xin
The project plan shows that about 50% of the production capacity will be used to meet the growing demand for metal packaging materials such as tinplate and Wuxi steel locally, while the remaining part will be used for export. This type of material is widely used in packaging fields such as food and beverage, coatings, lubricants, and chemical products.
WFI Chairman Mosaed Sulaiman Al ohali said, "This project AB/F36 steel is not only an investment in Saudi Arabia's industrial resilience and safety, but also demonstrates our long-term commitment to localizing technology, meeting domestic demand, and expanding export markets
WFI is a leading industrial enterprise in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, with over 50 years of experience. It operates 11 factories and has business operations in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. Its products cover multiple categories such as plastics, paper products, metals, and red bricks, with a core focus on packaging and building materials, serving key industries such as food, industry, and construction.
