Tata Steel Netherlands has announced its decision to temporarily shut down the Direct Sheet Plant (DSP) at its IJmuiden site; the facility operates as a cast-roll production line.
The company stated that recent emission measurements revealed hexavalent chromium levels from one of the stacks exceeding statutory limits. The decision to halt DSP operations was made following consultation with the North Sea Canal Area Environment Agency (ODNZKG). The company is currently implementing additional technical and organizational measures to reduce hexavalent chromium emissions. Normal production operations will resume only after testing confirms that the DSP fully complies with all standards.
Tata Steel has informed the environmental authorities of the aforementioned decision and will maintain communication regarding subsequent measures.
It is worth noting that the coking plant at Tata Steel’s IJmuiden facility had previously been ordered by Dutch environmental regulators to rectify issues related to emissions and had faced protests from environmental groups.
